THE UNDERGROUND
CLASSES FOR REGULAR PEOPLE TAUGHT BY SELF-DEFENSE EXPERTS
Self-defense and martial arts are often conflated, and while they overlap in significant ways they each have a distinct set of priorities. Self-defense training needs to be simple and effective so regular people can learn it quickly and use it right away. Martial arts training needs self-discipline and commitment in order to develop and refine increasingly complex skills over time.
Self-defense is commonly taught in one of two ways. On one side, it’s taught by overly confident martial artists who teach unnecessarily complicated skills. They very often have not taken responsibility to learn the realities of how interpersonal violence functions in society. On the other side, self-defense is also commonly taught by empowerment self-defense instructors who teach a research-backed combination of interpersonal skills. The physical fight training they offer is effective, but is often limited to a set of moves they have learned for that purpose.
The Underground Self-Defense Method combines the best of these two worlds. The Underground Self-Defense Course is taught by experienced black belt instructors whose identity matches the group served (we do not allow men to teach women’s self-defense, for example). These instructors are also specially trained in empowerment self-defense skills and philosophy, so we provide a safe, realistic, trauma-informed experience for our students. Similarly, we are able to provide trained male practice attackers for the course to give participants a realistic and empowering opportunity to apply their skills. Meanwhile, all our martial arts classes carry through this philosophy of practical and accessible self-defense that is physically, psychologically and emotionally safe.
Finally, for those who want more of the benefits of self-defense training after their course, we offer ongoing martial arts training options that are fun, engaging and motivating. Drop in for the occasional kickboxing class to get your blood pumping or set long-term goals like earning a black belt or training to become an instructor. No matter your goals, we have the professional experience, facility and programs to support you on your journey.
